Finding My Voice: Why I Created Bright Light Home — A Journey from Silence to Strength

by Skylar Petrik

Welcome to Bright Light Home — I’m Skylar, and I’m so glad you’re here.

This space comes from my heart and my story. For years, I spent in silence — searching for confidence, community, and a sense of purpose. I longed for a life built on faith, family, and grace.

Bright Light Home is for women going through real emotional struggles. It is a space for building confidence, finding community, and living with purpose.

🌱 My Story Begins with Silence

I was diagnosed with autism at the age of two and didn’t speak until I was eight. In those early years, I used sign language to communicate. I also had a speech device called Dynavox. My days included hours of therapy.

At the same time, my brother — who also had profound autism — walked a parallel path beside me. Thankfully, my parents never gave up on us. They were loving, determined, and full of grit. They poured their hearts into helping us grow.

✨ The Home That Shaped Me

My mom worked as a nurse and found joy in decorating, cooking, and crafting. My dad was a simple and frugal man. He did many odd jobs. On weekends, he fixed things around the house and worked in the yard.

Together, they showed me how to be kind and welcoming. They taught me to be helpful and humble. Most of all, they taught me to put family first. I watched my mom do yoga, follow home workout videos, and put on casual fashion shows in our living room. Over time, I learned how to cook, clean, decorate, and take pride in creating a peaceful, beautiful home.

Ultimately, those quiet, formative years gave me a dream.
✨ I want to build a business that brings beauty and makes a difference. Like Joanna Gaines, I don’t want just success. I want to create something that lasts and truly matters.

⚽ Finding Confidence Through Team Sports

High school was a turning point. I took a leap and joined the soccer and lacrosse teams — terrified, unsure, but determined. At first, I felt out of place. When I scored my first goal as a freshman, it was about more than a game. In that moment, I felt a spark of joy and belonging I’d never known before.

Sports gave me:

  • Confidence
  • Discipline
  • Belonging
  • My voice, through connection and effort

They taught me that showing up matters — even when you’re scared, even when you don’t feel ready.

👭 Finding Community — and Then Losing It

In college, I kept chasing that feeling of connection. After high school, I began in general studies. Then, I transferred to the University of Maryland . There, I studied environmental science. But I was still searching—not just for a major, but for meaning, mentorship, and direction. I joined Alpha Xi Delta in hopes of finding sisterhood and purpose.

Even so, life felt foggy. I worked minimum-wage jobs, had no mentors or internships, and no clear direction. I hadn’t taken career assessments or figured out what I truly loved.

Eventually, after graduation, I was unemployed for an entire year. I applied to hundreds of jobs — and heard silence in return. I felt defeated, invisible, and stuck.

🔥 A Spark of Purpose

I started volunteering at a nonprofit. It was a small step. But it sparked something inside me. I discovered a love for:

  • Community work
  • Impact
  • Service with meaning

As a result, I went back to school for a second degree in Communications. This path fit my natural strengths:
✨ Storytelling, empathy, and connection.

I realized I love:

  • Writing
  • Editing
  • Filming
  • Crafting
  • Creating visual stories through photo shoots and design

In hindsight, all the little joys from my childhood finally started to make sense.

💼 From Government Work to Creative Calling

Later, I got a job in the federal government. I worked as an editorial assistant through the Workforce Recruitment Program. I was grateful. But deep down, I wanted more creativity, more heart, and more purpose.

So, I started to dream again…

💡 A New Path, A New Purpose

I imagined a space for women. Especially those who have felt lost, unseen, or overwhelmed. A place where they could come home to themselves.

A lifestyle brand grounded in:

  • Beauty
  • Grace
  • Faith
  • Femininity
  • Quiet strength

A place that helps women prepare for what truly matters:
✨ Marriage. Motherhood. Home life. Personal growth.

A place that reminds women:
“You don’t have to hustle to matter.”

You can build a meaningful, peaceful life right where you are — and make it beautiful.

In the end, I wanted to create a brand that brings peace and purpose. I also wanted to give women tools to earn money, gain financial freedom, and build a happy home life.

That’s when Bright Light Home was born.
